How counselling helps

Counselling is essentially an opportunity: a space, a time that is yours alone, to talk and be heard with concern and understanding.

It is an opportunity for you to explore any patterns of behaviour, relationships, feelings, or thoughts which trouble you and cause difficulty in your life.

Counselling is a legitimate source of support in a crisis or during a difficult time. I believe that crises, however painful and difficult, are disguised opportunities for a fuller life than before.

So counselling goes beyond ‘fixing’ a problem. Its outcome is often broad personal growth - for example, becoming more effective, more capable, more creative.

The relationship you and I co-create is central to the process of counselling. It is open and natural, yet professional. It is confidential and conducted within other safe boundaries so that trust is possible.

My role is to be present with you in your exploration, to listen and respond, to help you clear away whatever blocks this exploration, to support you and challenge you.

The counselling process is not about giving advice. I don’t know what is best for you. I know quite a bit about helping you to discover that for yourself.

Finally, if you feel a situation or issue is important enough to bring to counselling, it is.
